We speak of why we don't talk more often
as much as we delight in one another's voice
and find it's the same story on both sides
of the silence: I don't want to weigh you
down with my worries; I don't want you
to be disappointed in me: I don't want
to bring you "nothing" as the offering
at the end of the day
but we deny each other the one
thing we both need when we do not
talk--each other's voice.
we both say we will do better
and fall immediately quiet
in the truck
