DEAR IMANI (NEIGHBORS YOU DESERVE)

The news has been too macabre
too full of dead and missing children
and I think of you tonight, so curious,
so innocent, so ready to take on the world.
I want for you to be safe. I admit that I
don't know how to protect you.
I wish I could promise you safety,
and a world worthy of your
wonder and joy; a world full
of expectation, of making all
this well. I want you to be okay.
I want the world you inherit, you live in
to be okay. And there are too many
dead and missing children; it's not
enough that you not be one of them.
I want you to have neighbors you deserve.
